Amsterdam Ladder

A reproduction of a vintage Dutch ladder, with square sides and a narrow profile.

Amsterdam ladder leading to a loft above a stairwell landing.

The story

Our client has a loft space above a stairwell landing. They wanted a ladder that was narrow so it would not block the stair landing, but would be safe to climb and would fold against the wall for storage.

When they described their dream ladder to us, we thought of a beautiful vintage ladder we saw in a shop in Amsterdam. As soon as we went into the shop, we knew that we wanted to make a reproduction of the ladder, manufactured by Hendrik A. van Waveren Ladderfabriek (ladder factory) between 1930 and 1950. It had such a sleek, clean look. The sides were square and the steps were thin but tall.

What defines our Amsterdam Ladder

Slim proportions

The side pieces are 1 3/4 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches deep. The steps are 3/4 inch high by 2 1/2 inches deep.

Square edges

The edges of the sides and steps are left square for a contemporary look.

Traction grooves

Each step has two traction grooves for safety.

Hidden screws

The screws for each step are countersunk and covered by a wood plug.
