Design Your Ladder
The story
Ships ladders are a hybrid between stairs and a loft ladder. They have a more relaxed angle, so they are easier to climb and have a smaller footprint than a traditional staircase, but they take up more space than a loft ladder. They have railings on the sides and an angle that makes it easier to go down facing forward, like you would on a staircase.
Ships ladders are great for cabins and tiny homes, or for anywhere in your home that is too tight for a regular staircase.
When clients request a ships ladder but do not have the floor space for one, we build a hybrid ladder. It looks like a ships ladder but has the angle of a regular ladder.
What defines our Ships Ladder
Solid proportions
The side pieces and steps are 4 1/2 inches wide by 4 1/2 inches deep.
Relaxed angle
The angle of the ladder is between 50 and 70 degrees. Other ladder types have an angle between 72 and 75 degrees.
Traction grooves
Each step has two traction grooves.
Distance from the wall
The bottom of a ships ladder is between 35 and 45 inches from the wall. Other ladder types are 20 to 28 inches from the wall.
Made for lofts, built your way
Ships ladders are used for accessing loft spaces.
Customization is unlimited: different wood species, a variety of hardware types and colours, and different edge profiles. Just let us know how you want your ladder to look.
