Amsterdam Loft Ladder

Our client has a loft space above a stairwell landing. They wanted a ladder that would be safe to climb, could fold away, when not being used and would not hit the light fixture on the wall.

When they described their dream ladder to me I thought of a beautiful, old ladder my wife and I saw in a shop window in downtown Amsterdam. When we went into the shop I knew right away that I wanted to make a reproduction of the ladder. It had such a European look, the sides were square and the steps were thin but tall. This beautifully crafted ladder was sleek and minimal looking.

The only change that I wanted to make was to change the steps from being narrow and vertical to small and horizontal, making it easier to climb.

I love upcycling furniture. Taking this design that was manufactured by Hendrik. A. van Waveren Ladderfabriek (ladder factory) between 1930-1950 and breathing new life into it was fulfilling and our clients love it!
