Amsterdam Ladder
THE STORY
Our client has a loft space above a stairwell landing. They wanted a ladder that was narrow so it wouldn’t block the stair landing, but would be safe to climb and would fold against the wall for storage.
When they described their dream ladder to me I thought of a beautiful vintage ladder my wife and I saw in a shop in Amsterdam. When we went into the shop I knew that I wanted to make a reproduction of the ladder, manufactured by Hendrik. A. van Waveren Ladderfabriek (ladder factory) between 1930-1950. It had such a sleek, clean look, the sides were square and the steps were thin but tall.
The defining elements of our Amsterdam ladders:
The sides pieces are 1 3/4” W X 1 3/4” D, the steps are 3/4” H X 2 1/2” D
The front corner of each step is a nd edges of the sides and steps are left square for a contemporary look
Each step has two traction grooves for safety
The screws for each step are counter sunk and covered by a wood plug
Our Amsterdam ladders can be used in libraries, kitchens, closets, wine rooms, mud rooms, pantries and lofts. Customization is unlimited, different wood species, a variety of hardware types and colours, different edge profiles, just let us know how you want your ladder to look.
