Ships Ladder

THE STORY

Ships ladders are a hybrid between stairs and a loft ladder. They have a more relaxed angle, so are easier to climb and have a smaller footprint than a traditional staircase, but they take up more space than a loft ladder. They have railings on the sides and an angle which makes it easier to go down facing forward, like you would a staircase. Ships ladders are great for cabins and tiny homes, or for anywhere in your home that’s too tight for a regular staircase.

When client's request a ships ladder, but don’t have the floor space for one, we build a hybrid ladder, it looks like a ships ladder, but has the angle of a regular ladder.

Ships ladders have these defining elements:

• The sides pieces and steps are 4 1/2” W X 4 1/2” D

• The angle of the ladder is between 50 and 70 degrees, other ladder types have an angle between 72 and 75 degrees

• Each step has two traction grooves

• The bottom of a ships ladder is between 35-45 inches from the wall, other ladder types are 20-28 inches from the wall

Ships ladder are used for accessing loft spaces.
