Amsterdam Loft Ladder
THE STORY
Our client has a loft space above a stairwell landing. They wanted a ladder that was narrow so it wouldn’t block the stair landing, but would be safe to climb and would fold against the wall for storage.
When they described their dream ladder to me I thought of a beautiful vintage ladder my wife and I saw in a shop in Amsterdam. When we went into the shop I knew that I wanted to make a reproduction of the ladder, manufactured by Hendrik. A. van Waveren Ladderfabriek (ladder factory) between 1930-1950. It had such a sleek, clean look, the sides were square and the steps were thin but tall.
The only change that I wanted to make was to the steps. They were narrow and vertical and I wanted them to be horizontal, making it easier to climb.
Our Amsterdam ladders can be used in libraries, kitchens, closets, wine rooms, mud rooms, pantries and lofts. These ladders feature square side rails and steps that are narrow, with traction grooves and a bevel on the step front corners. The edges of the side rails and the steps are square. The screws for each step are countersunk and hidden by wood plugs. Customization is unlimited, different wood species, a variety of hardware types and colours, different edge profiles, just let us know how you want your ladder to look.
